  • 「みなとみらい21」という名称は、「みなと横浜」をイメージしつつ、「未来への発展を目指す21世紀の横浜にふさわしい」名称として、 1981年 、一般公募された約2300点のなかから選出された。他の候補には、「アクアコスモ」「コスモポート」「赤い靴シティ」「シーサイドタウン」「シーガルタウン」等があった。
    • 決選投票は「赤い靴シティ」と「みなとみらい21」となった。なお、「みなとみらい21」の名称は、一次選考では落選している。二次選考の委員から再度発掘されたものである。

  • 1997年に都市景観100選を受賞している。
  • みなとみらい線の駅のデザインで2004年度グッドデザイン賞（建築・環境デザイン部門）を受賞。また、2006年には「横浜市の一連の都市デザイン」で同賞を受賞している。
