B'zの稲葉浩志とは、家族ぐるみの付き合いであるという。他に、 及川光博 ^[23] 、 唐沢寿明 ^[24] 、 深田恭子 ^[25]とも親しい。 Mikaと交友関係があり、彼の日本滞在時にAKB48の公演に2人で訪れた。 ^[26]

運転免許を取得しようと、取得前にポルシェを購入し、教習所に通ったことがあるが、自分には合わないと思い断念した^[27] 。また、自転車に乗るのが不得手。アメリカ時代、たまたま乗った自転車で車に轢かれたことがある。また、車に轢かれたことが数度あり、自分でも運の強さに呆れている、と語った。

デビュー当時（1999年1月）から「メッセ」と呼ばれるブログ（日記）を続けており、連作のイラストをアップしている。

ほぼ全ての曲で作詞 、 作曲を手がけ、多くの曲で編曲も自ら行う。アルバムULTRA BLUE以降はプログラミングも自ら行っている。

早熟な音楽家の近年代表例である彼女だが、雑誌のインタビューで絶対音感を持っていることを否定しており、「音がみんなドレミで聴こえるなんていただけない」といった趣旨の言葉をつづけている。

初期のころはR&B調の曲が多かったが、最近はポップ、バラードなどとジャンルが幅広くなっている。これは、本人曰く1つのジャンルにとらわれたくないからだという^[28] 。 2004年の海外進出後、しばらく浮遊感のある暗い曲が多かったが、2007年の『Flavor Of Life』で本来の作風に戻っている^[6] 。情報誌『 日経エンタテインメント! 』で、音楽関連の記事を手がける海老名邦明は『HEART STATION』の紹介記事で「デビュー当時と比べるとやはり成長している。その契機となったのは、作詞・作曲に加えて編曲もすべて1人で行うようになった04年からだろう。」と評している^[29] 。デビュー当初から宇多田を担当している三宅彰は、宇多田のデビュー10周年の際に受けたインタビューで宇多田の変化についてコメントしている。デビューアルバム『First Love』から『ULTRA BLUE』までのアルバム4枚は誰に向けて書いたのか具体的に見える曲が多かったが、『HEART STATION』は顔の見えない不特定多数に向いていると述べている。三宅はこれを「10代は内面に向かいがちだったのが、20代半ばになり社会と自分というものを結びつけることができるようになったのかなと思う」と評している。続けて三宅は宇多田がデビュー当初から変わっていないところに、「声」を挙げている。曰く「音楽的な趣味も変わっているし、精神的にも大人になったし、見える景色も変わったでしょう。でも声の魅力と本質的な性格はあまり変わっていない」 ^[30] 。

フレディ・マーキュリーを尊敬している。自身のサイトにおいて、好きなアーティストにナイン・インチ・ネイルズ 、 モーツァルト 、 ジミ・ヘンドリックス 、 バルトーク・ベーラ 、 レニー・クラヴィッツ 、 プリンス 、 エディット・ピアフ 、 コクトー・ツインズ 、 チック・コリア 、 ザ・ブルー・ナイル 、 ビョーク 、 TM NETWORK 、 尾崎豊 、 美空ひばりを挙げている。また、歌唱の面では元グルーヴ・セオリーのアメール・ラリューに強く影響を受けており、（自分の中で）師匠であると発言した^[31] 。

エレキギターはテレビ出演時等、ギブソン・レスポール・スタジオの黒を使っているのが確認出来る。宇多田本人のギターの使用はテレビ等では『Devil Inside』が最初^{[ 要出典 ]} 。 『 Be My Last 』はエレキギターで唄いながら創ったとも。作曲に使うのはマッキントッシュで、使用ソフトはLogicとの発言あり。スタジオのエンジニアリングではPro Toolsを、昨今では活用しているらしい。キーボードであるがマッキントッシュ（主にノート型（恐らくMacBook））につなぐのは単なるMIDIキーボード（PC-300）で、シンセサイザーとしてはKORGのTRITONを使っているという。最初のMIDIキーボードは、「Prisoner Of Love」のジャケット撮影時に偶然にも壊れた。それは5年間愛用したもので、チェコで仕事があった際も持っていったものである。 TRITONは現在ニューヨークの自宅のトイレに置いてあるという。壊れても捨てられないほどの愛着がある機材は最終的にトイレに行き着く^[32] 。

日本の歴代ミリオンセールスアルバムランキングTOP10では1位、4位、8位に彼女の作品が入っており^[33] 、宇多田ヒカル名義でのアルバムはすべて、 日本レコード協会から、ミリオンの認定を得ている。現在、アルバムを3作連続で300万枚以上売り上げた日本のミュージシャンは彼女のみで^[6] 、日本で最もアルバムを売ったアーティストとしてギネスブックに紹介されている^[34] 。

オリコンの「10代のシンガーソングライターによる1stアルバムから3作連続で初登場トップ5入り」の記録を持つ2人のうちの1人である（もう1人は加藤ミリヤ ） ^[35] 。シンガーソングライターのベスト盤のミリオン獲得の最年少記録（21歳3か月）を持っている。

オリコン年間好きなアーティストランキングでは、2004年、2007年、2008年度で3度の1位を獲得している。また、 HMVの「Top 100 Japanese pops Artists」（2003年）で24位^[36] 、「日本のシンガーTOP30」（2005年）に10位^[37] 。

  • 2000年6月26日渋谷on air east
  • 7月1日より始まる初の全国ツアーを前に行われた、シークレットライブ。また、このコンサートが初の有料コンサートとなった。前日の深夜のラジオ番組にていきなり告知され、チケットが販売されるも即完売となった。また、このライブは厳戒態勢の中で行われ、観客が入場待ちで並んでいるときも、スタッフより「何で並んでいるのか？と訪ねられても、絶対にライブのことは言わないでください。」とまで言われた。
