翌10月2日 、オリックス球団は本人の希望で清原を任意引退選手として申請し、同日パシフィック野球連盟から公示された[1] 。オリックスはこの年2位に入りクライマックスシリーズ出場権を獲得したが、清原は出場の辞退を自ら申し入れた。そのクライマックスシリーズ・ファーストステージ(対北海道日本ハムファイターズ )では選手の要望で清原のユニフォームがベンチ内に掲げられ、清原本人もゲストルームから声援を送った。

2009年 1月29日 、 日刊スポーツ (大阪本社)と専属評論家としての契約を交わす。 2009年は評論家として活動していくこととなった。また、同時に「将来的にまず二軍監督となってキャリアを積み、そして最終的には一軍監督として日本一になりたい」とも語っている。併せて、現在は球団経営者を目指している桑田とは、監督同士としてKK対決をやりたい、という希望も語っている。

放送局との専属契約は結んでいないが、 2009 ワールド・ベースボール・クラシックのTBSテレビにおける実況中継の特別解説者として出演した。体調不良のため2次ラウンド2試合の出演を欠席したが、準決勝、決勝ラウンドには復帰。日本の大会2連覇に際して「日本の皆さん!日本万歳!!」の叫びで豪快に中継を締めくくった 上記の体調不良に関しては現役時代よりの左膝痛であり、同じ着座姿勢を取り続けられないためと報道されている。ラジオ局の文化放送 、 ニッポン放送 、TBSラジオ3局からの西武戦などの解説依頼を断るなど、現在もその影響を引きずっている。また、 2009年 4月より、 フジテレビジョン 「 すぽると! 」で不定期ゲスト解説者としてプロ野球や各種スポーツの解説をしている。

清原は打者の三冠タイトルである首位打者、本塁打王、打点王の獲得経験が無いため、しばしば「 無冠の帝王 」と呼ばれる( タイトルを獲得していない訳ではない。詳細は野球における無冠の帝王を参照)。西武時代の監督森祇晶は清原が三冠タイトルを獲れなかった原因として「個人の欲を捨て、チームの勝ちにこだわった結果。 彼のような主力がいたから、私は西武の9年間で8度も優勝できた。 」と賛辞のコメントをしている。 30本塁打以上を7回、35本塁打以上を3回マーク。キャリアハイは他の大打者と比べ平凡であるが、ルーキーシーズンから13年連続20本塁打は日本記録である。通算の出塁率は打率を1割以上も上回り、.389と飛びぬけて優秀である。強打はもちろん、四球を選ぶことで他の打者のアシストという面でも西武の黄金時代に大きく貢献したと言える。

また、現役中10度のリーグ優勝、8度の日本シリーズ優勝を経験しているが、シーズンMVPおよび日本シリーズMVPの獲得経験も無い。 MVP選手を選出する際の得票数でも過去3度、2位(1986年、1位は石毛宏典 、1990年、同・野茂英雄 、1992年、同・石井丈裕 )につけている。特に1990年については清原自身、一時は三冠王を視野にいれるほどの勢いで、走攻守において高いレベルの活躍を見せたが、ルーキーでありながらその剛球と切れ味鋭いフォークボールで奪三振と勝ち星を積み重ねていった野茂英雄の強烈なインパクトの前にMVPをさらわれた。

2000本安打、500本塁打、1500打点を達成した打者は日本プロ野球史上清原を含めても6人しかおらず(他は王貞治 、 野村克也 、 門田博光 、 張本勲 、 落合博満 )、通算本塁打数は歴代5位、通算打点数は歴代6位(いずれも2008年シーズン終了時)を記録している。日本シリーズについては、過去に優秀選手賞を3度、敢闘賞を2度獲得している。また、オールスターMVP最多受賞記録(7度)も持っている。さらに、オールスター通算打率1位(100打数以上対象)、通算本塁打2位、通算打点1位という記録も持っており、『お祭り男』の異名を持つ。

通算三振数1955、通算死球数196の日本記録保持者でもある。死球については、西武時代の恩師である土井正博コーチが「清原に危険な内角球の避け方を教えなかったのは最大の誤算、700本は打てたはず」と語るほど避けることを苦手とする。向ってくる内角球に対し、背中を向けて避けることができず、この点は元阪神の田淵幸一などと比較されることが多い。

[ 編集 ] 肉体改造と怪我との闘い

清原入団後、斎藤雅樹の急激な衰えなど、主として投手陣の崩壊により巨人はV逸したが、この間清原は敗戦の責任、メディアやファンの批判を一身に背負った。 「巨人の4番」としての心労は西武時代とは比較にならず、入団当初は死ぬことすら頭に浮かんだという。 「車を運転していてハンドルを離してしまいたくなった」と当時を振り返っている。

クロスプレーで足の靭帯を断裂し後半戦を離脱、初めて規定打席不足に終わった1999年オフ、プロレスファンの清原はプロレスラーの前田日明に紹介してもらったケビン山崎のジムに通いウェイトトレーニングを開始。何を食べても飲んでもいいというケビンの方針により、暴飲暴食を続けたことで筋肉と同時に大きな脂肪も身に着け、前田のような肥満体になってしまう。顔やウエストが膨れ上がったことがTVでもすぐにわかるほどで、細面の顔で腰も太くなかった西武時代とは別人のような体型となっていった。

この『肉体改造』は30台中盤を迎えようとしていた清原の体重を増加させ、圧倒的なパワーで東京ドームで看板直撃ホームラン弾を連発することもあった。もっとも効果があらわれた2001年には、5番打者として自己最高の121打点を記録した。しかし肥満により足が遅くなり守備や走塁では衰えが目立った。酒やタバコ、夜遊びをやめられない清原は、ウェィトトレーニングでは1999年の故障を根本的に克服できず、以後肉離れや膝半月板など連鎖的な障に悩まされる。巨人退団直前には、体重を減量し走法や重心を修正するなど、現在は一般にも知られるような科学的トレーニングも取り入れたが、下半身の故障は既に限界であった。清原の1999年以後の規定打席到達は2001年のみに終わっている。

なお「清原は肉体改造の結果故障しやすくなった」という誤解からか、10年前( イチローが初動負荷トレーニングを取り入れる直前の時期である)のトレーニングということを考慮せず、野球選手のウェイトトレーニングそのものを「プロレスラーのトレーニング」などと断じる傾向があるが、関節を「筋肉の鎧」で外側からガードするという方法は、現在も選択肢のひとつである(清原自身も西武時代に亜脱臼を患ったときには肩周りの筋肉を固めることで克服している)。イチローのように食生活を改善し、節制し、正しいトレーニングを行えば、違う結果が得られていたといえる。

• 1985年夏、高校野球選手権決勝 対宇部商業戦
  • この試合、「 KKコンビ 」を擁し、後に5名のプロ野球選手を送り込むことになる「高校野球史上最強」と言われたPL学園は苦戦していた。しかし、この大舞台で清原は2打席連続の本塁打を放ち、優勝に貢献する。この本塁打に際し、実況していたABC( 朝日放送 )の植草貞夫 アナウンサーが「甲子園は清原のためにあるのか」とコメントした。自身、この試合で放った2本目の本塁打の感触を超える感触(本塁打)をプロでも未だに経験していないと話していた( ナンだ!?にて)。また、この2本はともに、リードされていた中での同点本塁打である。
• 1985年ドラフト会議
  • 前述したとおり、高校選手としては当時としては最多の6球団からドラフト1位指名を受けるも、意中の球団の巨人からは指名を受けることなく、指名後の記者会見では悔し涙を流す。しかも巨人から指名を受けたのはエースと4番の関係で共に甲子園を制し、早稲田大学進学を表明していた盟友・桑田真澄であった。
• 1987年オールスター
  • この年のオールスターゲームは「KK対決」といわれた。しかも場所は甲子園球場 。この初の「KK対決」を見事に制し、 パ・リーグの4番・清原はセ・リーグの先発・桑田からレフトスタンドに本塁打を放つ。
• 1987年の日本シリーズ
  • 巨人との日本シリーズ第6戦、9回表2死。日本一までアウト1つのところで西武ベンチはタイムを要求する。一塁手の清原が涙を流していたからである。工藤は清原を見て「打者は左バッターの篠塚さん、清原は涙でボールが見えないからインコースを引っ張られ一塁に打球が飛ぶと危ない」と判断した。
  • 「巨人を破って日本一が達成できて嬉しかった」と後に清原は語っている。また、日本シリーズ初の桑田とのKK対決ではレフト前ヒットを打っている。
• 1992年の日本シリーズ
  • ヤクルトとの日本シリーズ第2戦。 荒木大輔との甲子園ヒーロー対決の第3打席、清原が本塁打を放つ。
• 1993年シーズン中、対ロッテ戦
  • この日のロッテのマウンド上には伊良部秀輝 。打席には清原。伊良部の投じた一球は当時の日本最速となる158km/hを記録し、清原はこれをファウルする。しかしその後、清原は156km/hの直球をはじき返し、右中間二塁打を放つ。
• 1994年の日本シリーズ
  • 桑田とのKK対決では第1戦で桑田のスライダーをホームラン、第4戦では桑田のド真ん中への直球をセンターのバックスクリーンへホームラン。続く打席では第1戦に続いてスライダーをバックスクリーンへホームランし、KK対決では完勝。このシリーズで、清原自身は4本塁打の活躍を見せながらも、いい場面では打てず西武は巨人に2勝4敗で敗れた。
• 2002年の日本シリーズ
  • 古巣・西武との日本シリーズ第1戦。マウンドには故障上がりの松坂大輔 。第2打席、清原が松坂の直球を看板直撃の150m弾。 4戦でもリリーフに登った松坂からタイムリーを放ち、巨人が4連勝で日本一に輝いた。
• 2005年　シーズン中 対横浜戦
  • 2005年8月9日 、フルスタ宮城(現・Kスタ宮城 )において横浜のストッパー「ハマの大魔神」こと佐々木主浩の事実上の引退登板で、彼と最後に相対する打者として指名される。目に涙を溜めて打席に入った清原は明らかなボール球に対しても全球フルスイングで真っ向勝負し、最後はフォークで空振り三振に倒れた。そしてピッチャーマウンドに駆け寄り二人で握手を交わし、「最後に世界一のフォークが来ました」とコメントした。
• 2005年、阪神戦、2006年オールスター戦
  • 2005年4月21日の対阪神戦で、 藤川球児にカウント2-3からのフォークを投げられて三振を喫した際に「 2対10の二死満塁、カウント2-3でフォーク?信じられんわ。ケツの穴、小さいな。チ○コついとんのか!! 」と暴言とも言える発言をした。その藤川とは同年6月25日の試合で再度対戦するが、今度はストレートで三振を喫し、これには素直に『完敗』と認めた。それ以来、全力勝負したい選手の一人として藤川の名前を度々挙げるようになり、2006年のオールスターでも対戦したが、またも全球直球で三振した( 藤川の項を参照)。
• 2006年　シーズン中 対横浜ベイスターズ戦
  • 5月27日 、3点差を追う9回裏一死満塁でマーク・クルーンの投じた3球目の152km/hをはじき返し、右翼席に劇的なサヨナラ満塁本塁打を放つ。 「プロ21年間で一番うれしいホームラン。自分の力じゃない気がする。ファンの声援が、チームメートが」と振り返った。この本塁打で、 野村克也 (現楽天監督)のサヨナラ本塁打11本に並んだ。
  • 当時オリックスの監督だった中村監督は「(清原の本塁打は)神業や。すばらしいの一言。感服した。野球人生の記憶に残った」とコメントを残している。

• 清原といえば「ワイ」という一人称が代名詞であったが、実際には使用していない。 写真週刊誌 「 フライデー 」の人気連載企画をまとめた「おう、ワイや!清原和博番長日記」という書籍(内容は巨人時代のもの)が出版されたことがあるほどだが、インタビュー等では基本的に「僕」を使っている。また「 ジャンクSPORTS 」（ フジテレビ ）のスペシャルにゲスト出演した際、番長日記の事を浜田雅功に突っ込まれると「 僕は俺とか言いますが、ワイなんて言っていません 」と説明(自分のことを『ワシ』と言うことはたまにあるとのこと)。番長日記については「 俺は昔からフライデーに殴られっぱなしだから、今後もそれでいい。しかし、あれはマジで面白い 」と容認した。その後フライデーとは、何かあった時には取材に応じるから、追いかけ回さないという言わば協定なようなものを結び、フライデーの番長日記の定期連載は現在では終了し、現役引退の際にはフライデー誌上にコメントを寄せている。
• 番長等と呼ばれ豪胆な印象がある清原だが金を使う趣味は車位で他には他の選手のように投資や副業の事業に参画したことはなかった。これは若手時代に実父に投資の相談をしたところ「お前の投資は本業の打撃でホームランを打つことだろ。」と一喝された事が原因であるとインタビューで答えている。また唯一の趣味であった車は入団時から引退時までに10回近く買い換えた。
• 落合を非常に尊敬しており、ズボンを緩めるスタイルを真似したり、土井のコーチ解任後は打撃指導を受けたりもしていた。

• 長渕剛との関係は、清原が不調に陥ってた2000年にはじまって以来の付き合いである。清原が引退を最初に伝えたのも長渕であった。お互いを｢和博｣、｢剛さん｣と呼び合う仲である。
