メジャーリーグにおける最初の永久欠番は1939年 、 ニューヨーク・ヤンキースでルー・ゲーリッグが着用していた4を欠番としたことに始まる。当時ゲーリッグは、不治の病とされる筋萎縮性側索硬化症 [6]で引退を余儀なくされるが、永久欠番とする事でチームに居続けることができる事に歓喜した。引退の際、 "Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth." （「今日の私は自分を地球上で最も恵まれた男だと思っています」）と名言を残している。ナ・リーグではニューヨーク・ジャイアンツが1947年にカール・ハッベルの11を永久欠番に指定し、ナ・リーグ最初の永久欠番となる。

日本に無いケースとして「全チーム共通の永久欠番」、「複数球団にまたがる一競技者の永久欠番」、「複数の競技者を称えた永久欠番」がある。

全チーム共通永久欠番

42 。黒人選手第1号のジャッキー・ロビンソン （ドジャース）の背番号。ただし、制定された1997年 4月15日時点で既に42を付けていて、現在まで使い続けている選手に限り特例として継続して使用することができる。 2007年現在ではヤンキースのマリアノ・リベラが現役で唯一、そして最後の42を付けている選手。加えて、カージナルスのブルース・スーターも現役時代の背番号が42で、2006年に殿堂入りを果たして欠番に指定され、ロビンソンの背番号と並立することとなった。日本プロ野球では42は「死に」につながるため忌避されがちな番号だが、来日した外国人選手、特に黒人選手は米国では着けられないこの番号を希望し、着用することが多い。

複数球団にまたがる一競技者の永久欠番

現在までに9名が存在する。

複数の競技者を称えた永久欠番

現在までに3つのケースがある。

ジャイアンツのクリスティー・マシューソンとジョン・マグロー 、カージナルスのロジャース・ホーンスビー 、フィリーズのグローバー・アレキサンダーとチャック・クライン 、タイガースのタイ・カッブは、いずれも背番号が定着する以前の名選手だったが、永久欠番と同様の扱いになっている[7] 。

  • インディアンスの455は、 ホームゲームが455戦連続で満員になったことを記念し、「ファンのための背番号」として永久欠番としている。
  • エンゼルスは、球団オーナーで有名なカウボーイ俳優 、球団の応援歌も自らレコーディングしたジーン・オートリーのために、26を彼のための永久欠番としている。 26は、ベンチ入りを許される25人の次の選手になりたいというオートリーの希望によるといわれている。
  • パドレスのオーナーだったマクドナルドの社長レイ・クロックは、財政難による球団の危機を救った事を称えて、永久欠番と同様に顕彰されている。
  • タイガースの球場アナウンサーを42年勤め、ファンに人気を博し殿堂入りを果たしたアーニー・ハウエルは、背番号こそ無いが永久欠番と同様に顕彰されている。また、カージナルスのジャック・バック 、ジャイアンツのロン・シモンズとルース・ホッジス 、パドレスのジェリー・コールマンも名アナウンサーとして、同様の栄誉を受けている。
  • レッズの14は永久欠番ではないが、大リーグ史上最多安打を記録するも1989年に野球賭博に関わったとして永久追放処分となったピート・ローズ以後、着用したのはローズの息子であるピート・ローズ・ジュニア （ 英語版 ）だけなので準永久欠番。
  • タイガースの3はアラン・トラメルの準欠番扱いだが、2007年に移籍してきたゲーリー・シェフィールドに自ら与えた。これは、シェフィールドが過去に着用した1、5、10、11が全てタイガースの永久欠番・準永久欠番とされており[8] 、その後に背番号について相談を受けたトラメルが考慮し、自らの背番号を与えた。
  • モントリオール・エクスポズ（現・ナショナルズ）の永久欠番（ 8 ： ゲーリー・カーター 、 10 ： アンドレ・ドーソン・ラスティ・スタウブ 、 30 ： ティム・レインズ ）は、2006年から再び使用されるようになったため、現在は欠番になっていない。
  • 永久欠番とするための条件があるチームが存在する。ドジャース、レッドソックス、マリナーズ、アスレチックスの4チームは、選手の野球殿堂入り・チームが定める在籍年数などの条件を有している。

韓国では、1986年にOBベアーズ（現・斗山ベアーズ）に捕手として在籍していた金栄伸の54を制定したことに始まる。

韓国史上最高投手と呼ばれ、2002年1月28日に指定。 2001年のヘテからの身売りの際に「宣銅烈の18を返上、新人投手に与える」と発表したが、韓国球界・マスコミなどで猛反発を招き、元通り永久欠番に指定した。
三星ライオンズ
2003年に指定。チーム一筋の捕手で韓国史上に残るスラッガー。
韓国最年少で300本塁打とシーズン56本塁打のアジア記録を樹立した。
ピングレ・イーグルス→ ハンファ・イーグルス
21年間韓国プロ野球で活動。通算最多である3003イニング、210勝、2048奪三振記録。 2009年9月22日に指定。

1999年指定。台湾を代表する名捕手で、監督を務めた後に45歳で現役復帰を果たす。

2001年指定。盗塁王を5度受賞する名手。監督としても台湾シリーズ2連覇を果たしている。
球団史上に残る中心選手。コーチ・監督を務めた。 2008年、退団をもって制定。
初代監督。球団社長も務めた。

2006年 7月9日 、在籍していた新潟県 糸魚川市の少年野球チーム「大和川まりんファイターズ」の練習中に急性心不全で逝去。これを偲び、翌年に地元新潟アルビレックスBCが10を永久欠番に制定。その後、BCリーグでは10を全球団の永久欠番に制定した。

  1. ^ただし、制定された1972年は稲尾自身が監督として付け、失効した1973年に稲尾が背番号を変更したことから欠番となった。中西、稲尾の永久欠番は身売り当時、 黒い霧事件などによる球団内部の混乱もあり、身売り後の措置について取り決めを行わなかった為に、引き継がれなかったと言われている。
